Vine Village in the News, December 23, 2009

Vine Village was honored recently by the County of Napa and the Napa Recycling and Waste Service for our efforts in recycling. A luncheon honoring eight "2010 Business Recycling Leaders" was held at the Wine Train catering facility. We received a very cool award made of a melted wine bottle that will be hung in the office and, we received a Certificate of Recognition from State Assemblymember Noreen Evans and State Senator Patricia Wiggins.  So, thanks to our clients and staff for working hard to recycle everything possible around the ranch, and thanks for the recognition!

Here's what's happening this spring at Vine Village:

2010 Vine Village Celebration: date set for August 6th at Chardonnay Golf Club.  Auctioneer John Pereira will be with us again.   There’s plenty of work to go around to make this year’s Celebration a success, and there are lots of decisions to be made, so if you’re interested in helping, please let me know soon.

Last week, Vine Village was honored by the County of Napa and the Napa Recycling and Waste Service for our efforts in recycling.  A luncheon honoring eight 2010 Business Recycling Leaders was held at the Wine Train catering facility.  We received a very cool award made of a melted wine bottle that will be hung in the office soon.

On May 14, we’ll have a new resident coming to live at the Women’s House.  Her name is Tracie Greene, and she’s moving here from Chicago.  She’s been on our waiting list for several years and has been looking forward to moving here.  She came for an extended weekend visit in April and fit in quite well.  We think she’s super and look forward to her becoming a part of Vine Village.

Client Care Manager, Karen Murray, resigned her position, effective April 2.  We wish her well in her future endeavors.  I’ve taken over responsibilities of Client  Care Manager, in addition to my current position of Associate Director.

Save the Date: August 29th Preservation Napa Valley has included Vine Village in their second annual Carneros Barn Tour.  This will be a great opportunity to showcase the ranch.  Approximately 200 visitors will come through during the course of the day.  Our red barn was built in 1904, and has been lovingly cared for by us as long as we’ve been here – we’re very excited about this opportunity to honor the barn, and make new friends for Vine Village.

Unfortunately, Napa County was not selected to receive Community Development Block Grant funds from the State of California, so although we were one of two non-profit agencies that Napa County had chosen to support in the grant application, it was not funded.

Two nutritional science students studying at U.C. Davis have recently started an internship here.  They’ll be working on menu planning, improving the nutritional value of the meals we serve, adding more locally grown foods, recipe creation, and finding ways for us save money on the food we purchase.  We’re looking to hire someone to purchase and prepare food here on an ongoing basis.  If you know of any good candidates, please send them our way.  This will most likely be a 10-hour/week job.

You can now become our Fan on Facebook.  We’ve created a fan page and will keep it updated with upcoming events and news.

Upon learning that Napa County is the only North Bay County that has no permanent facility for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, and that Napa County Wildlife Rescue lost the location for its Songbird Clinic two years ago, forcing them to export all injured or orphaned birds out of county for rehabilitation and release, we approached the group about the possibility of moving the clinic here to Vine Village.  We’re currently negotiating with County staff about the possibility – Napa County currently has no zoning areas that can accommodate wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, although we think right here would be perfect!  We’ll formally bring this to the Board when we get a definitive answer from the County about whether they’ll allow this use.  Keep fingers crossed – birds in need are waiting!

We’d like to start hosting movie nights once a month, beginning this summer.  Our idea is to invite friends, supporters, and our clients to come enjoy a movie outdoors, projected against the exterior wall of our red barn.  We’ll ask that visitors make a small donation to Vine Village.  We think it will be an excellent opportunity for community building.

Best regards,

Saanen Kerson
Associate Director
