Vine Village Timeline 1972Land purchased from Frances Stearns\Coronap Corp 1973January - Kathleen Orme, David Alosi, Inger Kessler, hired as first staff February 22 - Vine Village officially incorporated as a non-profit organization March 3 - Michael & Nancy Kerson arrive "just for a month" to help fight for use permit and set up Vine Village; Standing room only at Planning Commission meeting - nearly all in attendance protest against us; Use permit denied and appealed to Board of Supervisors April 8 - Sporting Goods Auction at Corte Madera Community Center raises $5000. May 8 - Use permit approved by Napa County Board of Supervisors; Thanks to TV channels 2, 4, & 9 for showing up with cameras running; VV makes the news that evening May 15 - Sandra Riddell, first resident, moves in. Summer - Women’s House full (6 residents) Sandra Riddell, Lenora Jacob, Debbie Kerson, Twila Cheyne, Joan Mathews, Cheryl Blay August - Men’s House opens with 4 residents: Dan Orme, Arthur Van Damme, Bruce Greene, Paul Sommers Herb vinegar bottling project begins Conditions of use permit met - new septic system with engineered drainage system, water processing plant, parking & roads 1974February 24 - Michael and Nancy Kerson's daughter, Saanen, is born March - Guild founded May 19 - VV starts 4-H program for residents: goat, horse, & gardening projects September - all-ranch trip to Shasta Dam & Cheyne potato ranch October 27 - Art Van Damme Concert & Winetasting at Robert Mondavi Winery Spring: Cheyenne the Quarter Horse donated by the Dr. Morris Mink family First chardonnay vineyard planted Community Projects donates $900 for woodshop tools: Bay City Lodge IOOF donates 12-passenger van14,700 wooden grapestakes made & sold to Geyser Peak Winery Kaiser Steel donates 100 feet of 1/4 inch steel pipe for dam spillway 8500 gallon water tank built for Vine Village Water System Many groups visit: Rainbow Girls, Wintun School, Vallejo Special Ed, Caymus School, Sonoma State Hospital, etc. 1975February 21 - Napa Soroptomists donate $1000 to pave roads February - State of California awards $27,000 for self-care & Community Adjustment Skills program; Tucker & Debbie Crosby hired as teachers July 16 -use permit renewed & capacity increased to 12 August 31 - Art Van Damme Quintet concert & picnic at VV Other (Exact Dates Not Remembered): Joe & Marie Spalasso donate $1200 to convert garage into craft shop (later office) Greenhouse is developed from old horse barn Bay City Lodge IOOF donates $5000 to remodel Women’s House (Patsy Kalfain Sorority) donates $1000 to remodel goat dairy barn Ed Young Memorial contributions begin remodel of Vinegar Barn Residents & staff take trip to Tahoe for snow sports 1976April 28 - Napa Emblem Club donates $100 to greenhouse program May 26 - PASS evaluation (Program Analysis of Service Systems) modeled strongly after Dr. Wolfensberger’s (University of Nebraska) Principles of Normalization. We PASSed, after convincing them that the presence of Saanen's tricycle on the property did not demean the residents' adulthood... August 29 - Art Van Damme Quintet concert & picnic at VV December 18 - Arthur Van Damme & Twila Cheyne married Other: Tammy Goldsmith married Peter & Josephine Haas donate $20,000 and loan another $20,000 to expand & remodel Men’s House Vine Village listed in Survey: Agriculturally Related Vocational Training Programs In The U.S. - Nebraska State Office of Mental Retardation Mr. & Mrs. Walter Haas, Sr., donate $15,000 to build swimming pool Dr. Irv Silberstein of University of California (Berkeley) School of Optometry starts Vision Care Program for residents as training program for students Morris Sulstaft Foundation donates $15,000 to build foundation and 2 restrooms for Multi-Purpose Building. 1977May - Napa Valley College sponsors 3 classes at Vine Village:
